What is beta-carotene?
Beta-carotene is the raw form of Vitamin A. In layman terms, beta-carotene is the ingredient required to produce Vitamin A. Vitamin A is responsible for keeping your eyes healthy, to say the least. Beta-carotene is associated with imparting a carrot-like orangish glow to fruits and is widely being used as good tanning supplement too.
However, vitamin A and beta-carotene have a few of their own side-effects. These side-effects become more prominent in people with health issues like heart diseases, pregnancy, and even in smokers and drinkers.
Side-effects of Beta-carotene:
The pigment beta-carotene, being edible, generally poses little to no side-effects when taken in administered quantities under the guidance of a doctor. However, its regular and continuous use is not advised.
Increased vulnerability to cancer:
When administered in small, monitored doses, beta-carotene may bring about the desired results. But if one consumes it in large amounts, it increases their vulnerability to different types of cancer and in multiple folds, especially prostate cancer in men.
Not recommended during pregnancy:
Pregnant women are advised to not consume any form of tanning supplements, especially beta-carotene. It can pose hazardous consequences on the mother as well as the fetus if taken in undue amounts.
Regular smoking and drinking:
For chain-smokers and regular drinkers, beta-carotene is nothing short of a disastrous supplement. It is known to induce cancer in people who smoke and drink. Therefore, make sure you quit your smoking habit if you intend on taking monitored doses of beta-carotene supplements.
History of asbestos exposure:
Asbestos is quite infamous for inducing side-effects of health. And if you have a prior history of asbestos exposure, then beta-carotene supplements are not for you. the side-effects of beta-carotene coupled with those of asbestos are bound to take your health down the road very quickly.
Beta-carotene is known to increase the risk of heart disease in people. For someones who has undergone angioplasty, the use of beta-carotene is strongly advised against. Such antioxidant vitamins are not recommended for heart patients, especially without consulting the doctor.
True that Beta-carotene is a naturally occurring substance, but even so, it has its own cons. Beta-carotene converts to fat-soluble vitamin A, and the latter is lethal in large amounts.
